74" telescope, 1958 The 74" reflector, then Australia's largest telescope, was commissioned in 1955. At this time, Dr. Richard Woolley was Mt. Stromlo's director. Soon afterwards, Dr. Woolley was named Astronomer Royal, and Dr. Bart Bok of Harvard was appointed director, the observatory becoming newly-titled as the Department of Astronomy, Australian National University.
