April\u2019s Monthly Media is brought to us by PhD student <\/span>Anishya Harshan<\/span><\/u><\/a> from <\/span>UNSW<\/a> <\/u>on a <\/span>paper<\/span><\/u><\/a>\u00a0released in mid-2020. The paper, lead by Zhen Wan from <\/span>USyd<\/u> <\/a>and co-authored by ASTRO 3D researchers and affiliates <\/span>Jeffrey Simpson<\/span><\/u><\/a>, <\/span>Sarah Martell<\/span><\/u><\/a>, <\/span>Sanjib Sharma<\/span><\/u><\/a> and <\/span>Gayandhi De Silva<\/span><\/u><\/a>, provides <\/span>a new perspective about how galaxies evolve. <\/span><\/p>\n

The research looks at a star cluster that is in the process of being pulled into the Milky Way, and may very well be the last of its kind.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What they found is <\/span><\/span>a globular star cluster with <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>lowest yet recorded levels of metals (in astronomy, \u201cmetals\u201d are elements other than Hydrogen and Helium) found in the Phoenix stellar stream, a set of stars in the halo of the Milky Way. The stream is believed to be the remnants of a globular star cluster, spread out over time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Until Wan and colleagues made their measurements, astronomers believed that star clusters in the Milky Way \u2013 and in a wide variety of galaxies \u2013 all possessed at least a minimum amount of heavy metals such as iron (Fe). No clusters had been found that contained less than 0.3 per cent of the metals found in the Sun.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was thought that this level constituted a \u201cmetallicity floor\u201d, beneath which no star cluster could exist in the present-day Universe.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Phoenix stream, however, contains a substantially lower component \u2013 less than 0.0019 times the metallicity of the Sun \u2013 meaning that its stars were formed much earlier in the life of the Universe. Low metallicity stars are thought to have formed as long as 10 billion years ago.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

\u201cThe Phoenix stream thus represents the debris of the most metal-poor globular clusters discovered so far,\u201d the scientists write.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Wan and colleagues suggest the ancient cluster was either formed in a dwarf galaxy or in a galaxy with lower than expected metallicity for its size.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIts existence implies that globular clusters below the metallicity floor have probably existed, but were destroyed during Galactic evolution,\u201d they conclude.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The researchers suggest that further observations \u2013 especially those that will derive from the soon-to-be-launched <\/span><\/span>James Webb Space Telescope<\/u><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> \u2013 will reveal whether the Phoenix stream is a galactic glitch, or whether similar remains of ancient clusters are more common than <\/span><\/span>previously <\/span><\/span>thought. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":223,"featured_media":29944,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[19,23,4,10],"tags":[],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-29692","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-galaxy-evolution","category-monthly-media","category-outreach","category-unsw"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nRemnants of an old neighbour engulfed by the Milky Way -
