How do galaxies evolve from the complex, merging systems of the early Universe to the familiar Hubble types we see today? Tidal torques of the cosmic web impart angular momentum, which is consequently a fundamental property in a galaxy’s evolutionary history, affecting that galaxy’s size, density and morphology. In this talk I will present my group’s research into the relation between specific angular momentum and galaxy evolution from the peak of cosmic star formation to today, including the close connection between the internal spatial distribution of angular momentum and visual morphology. |
