Neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption provides a window into the cold neutral gas of the interstellar medium (ISM). Using the ASKAP telescope, the Galactic ASKAP (GASKAP) project is surveying HI absorption across the Galactic plane and the Magellanic clouds, massively increasing our knowledge of cold HI. How do you scale up a boutique process previously used for a few tens of spectra to something that can be run across hundreds of thousands of measurements that GASKAP will obtain though? And what is this unprecedented data set telling us about the ISM in our Galaxy and our nearest neighbours? In this talk I will describe the data validation processes and absorption pipeline that go together to produce the GASKAP HI absorption dataset, and the cold gas properties of the Magellanic system. |
