Last year I gave a FoF talking about methods of celestial navigation (finding your location on Earth, especially at sea, using the sky). People then asked me if I was going to try it out for real, so I thought I would -- I bought a nautical sextant and set myself the goal of working out the MSO’s latitude and longitude using measurements of the Sun. How does it work? How accurately did I locate the observatory? I’ll talk about that, and -- weather permitting -- we can have a live hands-on demonstration afterwards. If anyone wants to try it out for themselves afterwards, you’re welcome to drop by my office (CSO 1.32) on sunny days. |
