The very low-mass end of the galaxy mass function is a complicated place, and there are multiple ways for a stellar system to find itself at the present day with a small size and a low stellar mass. Globular clusters are one type of compact low-mass stellar system, and they are studied both as satellites of galaxies and as old stellar systems in their own right. I will describe some of the ways globular clusters are used in galactic archaeology and some of the things we have learned about their role in stellar halo formation. My aim is to illuminate connections between observables at high and low redshift, the globular clusters in the Milky Way and in other galaxies, and some of the unique opportunities for research presented by globular clusters and other very small galaxies. |
