Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs), have the sizes of giant galaxies but the luminosities of dwarfs. So far, simulations are not able to reproduce all of their characteristics and observations suggest multiple formation pathways. Many UDGs are overabundant in globular star clusters for reasons which are likely linked to their early formation times. Globular clusters allow the determination of UDG properties, such as stellar populations and total masses, that are otherwise very challenging to obtain for these low surface brightness objects. I’l describe our observations of UDGs in a variety of environments and with a range of fundamental properties. I’ll draw comparisons with simulations of dwarf galaxy and UDG formation and describe predictions from simulations of their globular cluster systems. |
