Pablo Corcho Caballero

"Ageing and quenching in the local Universe."

In this seminar I will present some of the results I have obtained so far during the course of my PhD. First, I’ll discuss the current bimodal paradigm of galaxy evolution (i.e. star-forming vs passive), and whether galaxies form two physically distinct groups in terms of stellar mass and specific star formation rate. Actually, the existence of a quiescent population of galaxies is related to the question: do galaxies (completely) stop forming stars? I’ll show that observational and theoretical approaches might offer different answers. The bimodal picture is often explained by means of ’quenching’ processes, that drive the star formation history of galaxies to a halt. The last section of my talk will be devoted to present an observational method to discriminate between those systems undergoing secular (i.e. ageing) and fast evolution (i.e. quenching), and its connection with other physical properties. I’ll finish the talk providing a summary of the main conclusions and some future prospects.
