"Optical Technologies for Preventing Collisions in Orbit: Shining a Light on the Growing Problem of Space Debris"

The 2020’s is set to be the decade of mega-constellations and cheap access to space. But humanity is largely unprepared for the increased risk of in-orbit collisions associated with each new object that we launch. New technology is required to prevent a run-away cascade of collisions which could render entire orbital regions unusable. At the DLR Institute of Technical Physics, we believe that space debris is a problem with an optical solution. This talk covers our research into optical technologies for the tracking and removal of space debris, including satellite laser ranging, debris laser ranging, and light curve analysis.
