"Remote Sensing: From Exoplanets to Water Management"

The use of remote sensing through free, open and publicly available satellite imagery for managing Australia’s water resources has greatly increased in recent years, for understanding the presence and changing behaviour of water across the landscape, the extent and condition of native vegetation as well as for helping ensure water users stay within the rules. Such imagery provides a powerful tool, with careful and tailored application. This talk provides an overview of how such imagery is currently being used within the Murray-Darling Basin, and outlines how big data, programming and statistical analysis skills obtained from an Astrophysics career can play a big role in developing Australia’s future water management under a drying climate.
