"Dome Seeing Probe: An instrument to measure optical turbulence inside an observatory dome."

Turbulence is a major problem in astronomy, limiting telescope resolution and the ability to resolve small, distant objects. However, current efforts to minimise this turbulence focus on the turbulence in the atmosphere, discounting the turbulence inside the telescope dome. Here, we present an instrument that can measure turbulence inside the telescope dome, while also separating out vibrations caused by the telescope mount and related instruments. With this information, astronomers and telescope dome operators will be able to get a better understanding of the exact conditions in their dome so that they can minimise the inside seeing.
