Next: Science Goals - Large Scale Structure
Up: The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey
Previous: The Planned Survey
-
Taking advantage of best observing conditions can reduce exposure times
for faint galaxies by up to 2
.
-
A faint redshift survey is very efficiently carried out as a
good-seeing override on a larger bright survey.
-
Plan to use 10% of total allocation (
subarcsec
seeing) to measure redshifts for 6000 galaxies to R=21.
-
This is 5 to 10
larger than existing redshift surveys to
this depth.
-
Will provide longer redshift baseline (
=0.3) for examining
evolution of galaxy population and its large-scale structure.
-
Considerable added-value to the science of the bright survey for
little extra observational cost.
