The Planned Survey

The parameters of the planned 2dF redshift survey are:

• Magnitude limit B=19.7 <z>=0.1
• Total area of survey 1700 sq.deg:
  • contiguous strip in south Galactic cap
  • contiguous strip in north Galactic cap
  • 100 random 2dF fields over APM survey area
• Total of 250,000 galaxies with 1-in-1 sampling.
• Total time required is 90 nights (allowing for weather): starts Jan 1996, plan to complete by end 1997.
• Compared to Las Campanas survey:
  • slightly fainter magnitude limit
  • similar redshift depth
  • 2.5 the area (more power at >100Mpc)
  • same high sampling rate (small-scale resolution)
  • 10 the total number of galaxies ( , LF as functions of type, density)
