Thanksgiving

I was lucky enough to spend Thanksgiving in beautiful Vermont, with much food and drink, and excellent company. We drove up Wednesday night, with old episodes of the Muppet show to keep us entertained. We didn’t get up until around midday the next day, as the house had a pool table. We did a small amount of exercise, going to a nearby waterfall.

looks cold…

I didn’t have much to do with meal preparation, but by dinner time a wonderful spread appeared. Though Steve made a good effort, there were many leftovers. There probaby still are…

Friday was a planned ski day, but copious rain and cold the day before made it a crappy option. We walked into Warren instead, since we had our warm gear on. Snowballs were thrown…

icicles

Saturday and Sunday I spent in concentrated effort trying to remember how to ride a snowboard. I had some success, if my inability to walk properly today is any indication. The conditions were typical for early season New England: not really enough snow to open, but going ahead and doing it anyway. Never before have I ridden over grass and small trees poking up through snow.

Despite ice, rock, and small tree issues, the setting is amazing, with ice covered trees lining the edges of the trails, and the beautiful views of the surrounding hills that accompany each chair ride (along with snow being blown in my face, another New England tradition I believe).

We came back tired, relaxed, and unable to comprehend what the new week would bring back in the city. Cheers!

Crazy signs

I love all the crazy signs I see around the place…

mmmm fresh killed…

Winter is a comin’

There were wisps of snow as I walked to school this morning… and I’ve just taken delivery of my new snowboard!

Today it’s actually snowing…

Macbook Pro battery issues

This morning my macbook pro’s battery was clearly in trouble. It had been charging overnight, and was displaying 74%. I unplugged it for a while, and it went flat in half an hour. It then wouldn’t charge, remaining at 2-4% for an hour or so.

I found this article, showing how to reset the “system management controller.” I did this, and now the battery is charging as normal. No new battery for me! (for now at least)

UPDATE: Now my battery is completely screwed. iStat Pro tells me I have about 25% health and I usually get less than half an hour of charge. My computer tends to die randomly when the charge goes below half or so, so I just leave it plugged in all the time now. A trip to my local mac shop is order when I find time…

UPDATE AGAIN: Battery replaced for free!

Well, they’re doing something with a lot of polystyrene…

New York

After a night of Manhattans and Nic’s home brew, I dragged myself off to South Station and headed for New York (again). The purpose being a few days hanging with old Massey mates Todd and Nick. Arriving in Chinatown, I headed north in the hope of seeing someting interesting before meeting up with the others.

First I stumbled upon a footbag (what we call hacky, but they’re good) competition. Those dudes were unbelievable, though looked rather cold in shorts and t-shirts.

people watching hacky, mostly

We were staying at some crazy place near Times Square, so had a look at the place before heading down to Ludlow St for a pub crawl. The bars there are nice, not too trendy or expensive (for NY), and most importantly very close to each other. They guys were a little jet lagged however, and we were home by a respectable 1am or so.

bright lights, etc.

In the cold light of the new day we wandered up to Central Park for a few band photos, and caught the subway down toward Chinatown for Nick to buy a handbag.

It was funny to see the people hocking fake Louis Vuitton bags, and hastily packing up their suitcases when police looked like coming by. Now I know what random dodgy looking people trundling suitcases around have in them.

We carried on down to see the huge Staten Is. queue, and take some pics of a very small Statue of Liberty. We stopped by Ground Zero, and took some photos through holes in the fence. The place is still a complete mess, as you might expect from such a massive project.

That done, we made our way back up to Times Sq area for some beers. Dinner was BBQ in a huge place, probably seated 500 at a time or something. Our food was good, and came fast… mmmm

Monday was hometime, good ol’ Chinatown bus. The rest of the photos are here.

updated!

So I spent way too much time this afternoon updating to wordpress 2.3.1, the newest revision of my theme K2, and deciding to stop the whole embedded gallery thing. I think everything still works.

What is the point of tags, when I already have categories?

Laurie’s visit: Cape Cod

Hot on the heels of my previous trip to the Cape, I took Laurie out the for a drive last Sunday. Arriving somewhat late, the lady at the rental place gave me an upgrade and 10% off my car. Hello Chevy Impala SS with warmed leather seats and a somewhat decent rumble!

storm surf at cape cod

We stopped at my favourite breakfast place in Barnstable after a walk on the beach, and then went on to other beaches… There was a massive storm the night before, and there were bits of tree everywhere. The other sign of the storm, large waves, was still present, along with tonnes of surfers. We also saw whales much further out to sea, and other seashore wildlife.

We had an early dinner in Provincetown, and kind of saw the sunset up at Race Pt. We took our shiny car back to Boston…

mmmm big american car…

Laurie’s visit: Driving around New England

So we went for a drive around New England… Going through New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Fun!

We started by heading west on the 2, happening past good ol’ Walden pond on a rainy morning. We stopped in for a look. I think it must be nicer in summer, when people go there to swim. There’s a replica of Thoreau’s cabin to look at, but not a lot else…

Carrying on west we stopped at The Clark for lunch and a walk around the galleries there. Throughout western Mass there were lots of wonderful fall colours.

We then cut across a wee bit of Vermont and up to the bottom of Lake George in NY for the night. We stayed at the first of four excellent, typical, cheap hotels.

In the morning we caught some sunrise over the lake, and headed up beautiful 9N toward Ticonderoga. Somewhere along the way we hopped out for a walk though the foliage.

fall forest

We moved on up to Ticonderoga to find the fort closed for the season, so had lunch by the cute little waterfall in town instead. After lunch we headed up and out of New York in to Vermont, across some hills, and stopped in Barre for the night.

Saturday was rather yucky, so we spent most of it driving in the car. We went across to the White Mountains, going up through Franconia Notch, and up into Maine. Around there it feels very remote and rural, with lots of lakes and roads going through trees. It felt like somewhere we should have seen a moose or a bear, but we didn’t.

maine roads

With the weather still pretty average we headed toward Acadia, and stayed the night at a Super 8 in Bangor.

We cruised out to Acadia for the day on Sunday. It was sunny but pretty cold in the wind, so we went for a walk to the top of a large rock. The fall colours alongside a beautiful clear lake were rather nice.

Acadia by Jordan Pond

Back in the warmth of the car we drove around the one way circuit, and saw a moose! Some people were stopped somewhat badly in the road, but we forgave them when we saw why.

moose!

After the moose we nearly ran over several deer, it being near dusk. We popped up Cadillac Mt for a look at the sunset before having lobster for dinner in Bar Harbour, and moving out to Ellsworth for the night. Unfortunately our cheap motel didn’t have the baseball, so we caught some of the last World Series game on the radio. I was so tired from the epic game the night before I couldn’t last, and heard about the win the next morning…

NH beach

Monday was spent driving back to Boston, with a few sidesteps along the way to walk along the beach. We made it back at a respectable hour for some well needed sleep…
