To those who question whether it’s worth buying raffle tickets at the Stromlo barbeques I say:
490g Cadbury milk chocolate egg with assorted milk & dark chocolates
–thanks Jose, I’ll pay you later…

Phew! I have now been to the top of Australia, all 2281m of it. I know it’s a little low but we did have to walk a whole 9km along a pretty flat road to get there. At the top was a sign informing us about how they changed added the ‘z’ to the name in 1997 due to some typographical error when it was named after some Polish guy in the 1800’s.
edit: for some informed information on the Polish connection have a look here
Needless to say the views were excellent and the day was well spent, and we saw a fox! Photos here.

I’ve spent the last three nights at SSO on the 40″ telescope with Daniel Bayliss looking at the galactic plane. The surrounding national park is beautiful, and there are plenty of walks one can do to pass the daytime hours not spent sleeping, see this entry for the one I did. The trip was a a great learning experience. I now feel the urge to dream up a few observational projects of my own..
Today I climbed up to the summit of Mopra, which is a ’short’ walk from Siding Spring Observatory, where I’ve been observing this week.
I don’t have any photos of the peak from a distance yet, but it’s a steep rocky pillar with more than its fair share of rock scrambling needed. The image below is part of where I climbed…

More pics here.
We had the sceond in our monthly series of poker nights recently. We each started with about $30,000 (though you can call a chip what you like I guess) and by the end of the night Dan had something like $180,000. In reality he walked away with the princely sum of $30, with which he will buy ’supplies’ for the next night.
I started strongly with a few good two pair hands, but simply couldn’t compete with the likes of Nic’s handful of flushes and straights. My downfall came when I had a nice three of a kind destroyed by Amanda’s straight. There’s a photo or two here. Better luck next time…
