Directions
Driving: From Sydney, you will enter Canberra along Federal Hwy, which will then turn into Northbourne Ave. Turn right onto Barton Hwy, and then left onto Gungahlin Dr. That will then turn into Caswell Drive, which will itself turn into the Tuggeranong Pky (if unsure, follow the signs towards Woden and/or Tuggeranong.) Take the Cotter Rd exit, and turn right at the lights onto Cotter Rd. Keep heading along Cotter Rd until you see the sign & turn for the observatory on the right, then make your way up the mountain & you're there! Click here for a map of this route.
Bus: Buses arrive at the Jolimont Centre, in Civic. Taxi ranks are located at the front and rear entrances. The central city is a 5 min walk away and the ANU campus is 20 min walk towards Telstra Tower. Murrays and Greyhound have regular buses to Canberra from all major cities.
Please note, there is no public transport available directly to Mount Stromlo. You can get to the observatory by driving or by taxi. If you don't have transport, let us know and we will either organise you a seat on the student minibus, or hook you up with someone who can offer a lift.
Flying: Canberra Airport is located on the North side of the city, a 20 min taxi ride to Civic, or a 35 min ride to Mount Stromlo.
Accommodation
On campus: Staying on camups is a convenient option, and is central to Civic. The ANU Accommodation Office can help you looking for a room on campus. Plus, if you ask us nicely you can probably hitch a ride on the student minibus which makes a daily trip up and down the mountain (subject to available seats).
Other accommodation: There are plenty of other cheap places to stay in Canberra, although bear in mind that the city is very spread out so stick to areas which are close to the mountain if you don't want to spend $60 on a taxi. Try websites like the Canberra Accommodation Association to find a good deal. The student minibus also travels via Civic if you're looking for a lift up the mountain.
If you get really stuck, ask us extremely nicely and you can probably crash at someone's house (axe murderers need not apply).
