The first SkyMapper images were acquired last night. The above image shows the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Issues of scattered light in the system remain to be solved.
 
Focal Plane produces low-noise images

The SkyMapper focal plane is producing low-noise images. In the above bias frame the read noise is typically 5-6 electrons with a gain of just over 1.
 
SkyMapper has official opening

The SkyMapper telescope had its official opening at both Siding Spring Observatory and at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. At Siding Spring her Excellency Prof. Marie Bashir

The EOS-T team brought the shipping containers containing the telescope components to site and over the ensuing few days installed the telescope on to the previously fabricated pier
