DST Group has been actively involved in research into free space optical communications (FSOC) for over a decade, and in this seminar I will present an overview of this programme. We have conducted studies of laser atmospheric propagation, including numerical simulations and experimental measurement campaigns. This has underpinned work conducted in conjunction with the University of South Australia on the development of forward error correcting modems for the free space channel. We have developed novel FSOC systems based on modulating retroreflectors for applications with low size, weight and power constraints. With support from the Royal Australian Navy, we have developed a laser-based communications system to replace their ’flashing light’ signalling. I will conclude with a look at our emerging research directions and collaborative opportunities. |
