2. VENUE

The Scientific Sessions will be held in Becker House, Australian Academy of Science (known locally as "the Dome"). Posters will be displayed for the duration of the meeting in the areas surrounding the auditorium where morning and afternoon teas, and lunches, will be provided. From Sunday 16 August through Friday 21 August, meeting participants can be contacted by FAXing messages to +61 2 6247-5373 (available 24 hrs). This number will also be available part-time for voice contact, but we encourage the use of FAX when possible. Facilities will be provided to allow participants to access their e-mail, but bandwidth will be very limited.

Becker House is approximately 20 minutes walk from the James Court Apartment Hotel, where most participants are staying, and about 10 minutes walk from the City Walk Hotel. Bus transport, however, will be provided before and after each day's sessions. In the morning, buses will depart from the James Court Hotel at 8:30am. Participants staying at the City Walk Hotel requiring bus transportation should make their way to the James Court Hotel (~10min walk). In the evening, buses will depart from Becker House at 5:45pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, after the conclusion of the sessions. There will be no return bus on Wednesday since the afternoon is free. The return buses will stop near the City Walk Hotel on their way to the James Court Hotel.

Canberra can be very chilly in August, especially at night. Bring a warm jacket.

3. ACCOMMODATION

The majority of the Symposium participants will be accommodated in the "James Court Apartment Hotel" located at few minutes walk from the city centre (74 Northbourne Avenue, Canberra, ACT 2601, Phone +61 2 6240-1234, FAX +61 2 6240-1235). This recently opened building consists of one and two bedroom apartments. Each serviced apartment has a lounge (TV, video, FAX) and a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, stove, microwave and dishwasher. Each bedroom has an individual bathroom (with a spa bath) and separate laundry. The hotel also has a gym, a pool, a sauna and a spa and there are a variety of restaurants on the lower levels of the building.

Participants who requested "back-packer" accommodation have been booked into the "City Walk Hotel" located in the centre of the city (Corner City Walk and Mort Street, Canberra, ACT 2601, Phone +61 2 6257-0124, FAX +61 2 6257 0116).

Both hotels are approximately a 15min (~A$20) taxi ride from Canberra Airport.

Payments should made directly to the hotel when leaving. Please contact Beth.Stoodley@anu.edu.au (with a copy to tss@mso.anu.edu.au) if your travel dates are different from those you gave on the registration form.

A map of central Canberra showing the location of Becker House, the James Court Apartment Hotel, and the City Walk Hotel has been posted on the Meeting Web page (http://msowww.anu.edu.au/~tss/map2.jpeg).

4. PROCEEDINGS

The proceedings of the meeting will be published as part of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific's Conference Series. Each registered participant will receive a copy of the proceedings. Invited speakers will be allowed a maximum of 12 pages for their contributions, while contributed oral and poster presentations will be allowed 5 pages.

The deadline for the receipt of camera-ready manuscripts will be
October 23, 1998.

Instructions for formatting manuscripts can be obtained via anonymous ftp from "merlin.anu.edu.au". Change directory to pub/tss and get the README.tss file. This file contains information on the procedures to be followed in both manuscript preparation and manuscript submission. Manuscript .tex files and accompanying .ps files for figures should be deposited, again via anonymous ftp, in the directory pub/tss/manuscripts. The proceedings will be edited by Brad K. Gibson, Tim S. Axelrod and Mary E. Putman. Please contact Brad Gibson (gibson@mso.anu.edu.au) if you have any manuscript queries.

5. SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Sunday August 16. This evening there will be an informal reception at Becker House, Australian Academy of Science, from 7:00 until 10:30pm. Participants will be able to collect their registration materials and display their poster papers. (A conference backpack will be provided and will include note-taking essentials and a sample of dark matter.) The cost of this reception is included in the registration fee. Soft drinks and an assortment of finger foods will be provided, as will a modest amount of beer and wine. Buses will depart from the James Court Apartment Hotel at 6:45pm and leave Becker House to return at 10:30pm. Participants staying at the City Walk Hotel should walk either to Becker House directly (approx 10min) or to the James Court Hotel (also about 10min) for bus pickup.

Tuesday August 18. This evening, from 7:45 until 10pm, there will be an informal tasting of some of the best Australian and New Zealand wines at the Mount Stromlo Exploratory. The cost of participation in this event is A$35 to cover the cost of the wines and a modest amount of food (equivalent to a light dinner). For those who wish to attend but who have not yet purchased a ticket, additional tickets can be purchased at registration. Buses will depart from the James Court Apartment Hotel at 7:00pm and depart the Exploratory for return at 10:15pm.

Wednesday August 19. The Scientific Sessions will end at lunchtime on this day to enable participants to relax and enjoy Canberra's many attractions. A tour of the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (see birdlife, kangaroos, emus and koalas in natural surroundings) has been arranged. A limited number of additional tickets are still available on a first come first served basis - A$20 each. The bus for the Tidbinbilla tour will depart from Becker House at 1:30pm and return to the James Court hotel at approximately 6pm.

Thursday August 20. This evening, from 7:00 until 11:00pm, the Conference Dinner will be held in historic Members Dining Room of Old Parliament House, the site of Australia's House of Representatives and Senate from 1927 until 1988. The evening will feature pre-dinner drinks followed by a three course meal. A set amount of wine, pre-dinner champagne, beer, juice, and soft drinks are included in the dinner ticket price; other drinks can be purchased from the Bar. Buses will leave from the James Court Apartment Hotel at 6:45pm. Return departure will be at approximately 11:00pm and the buses will stop near the City Walk Hotel. Additional tickets to the dinner will be available for purchase at the reception on Sunday evening and on Monday and Tuesday morning. A vegetarian alternative will be available; if you prefer this option, and you have not already told us, then please do so as soon as possible (e-mail tss@mso.anu.edu.a).

If you have any questions regarding accommodation, they should be directed to Beth.Stoodley@anu.edu.au; any other questions can be sent to tss@mso.anu.edu.au.
