Computer Information for Observers

Computer Accounts for Observers

You will need a computer account to carry out your observing. If you do not currently have an account, complete and sign this form and fax it back to RSAA at least two weeks before your observing run.

Your observing data

Apart from the WFI instrument on the 40inch telescope, RSAA does not automatically archive any observing data. You must ensure that when your run ends, you take away a copy of your data on tape or CD. DDS4 and DDS3 tape drives area available and you should bring your own tapes if that is your preferred method of data archival. Your data will be removed from the system by the next observer, so don't leave the mountain without your data

SSO Internet Link

Currently, SSO connects to the outside world via a 512Kbps ADSL link. This is shared by all users and telescopes at SSO. It is important that you don't overload the link by ftp'ing your data off the mountain, listening to internet radio stations, downloading music, etc, etc. The ANU also forbids the use of P2P file sharing software such as Gnutella, Edonkey, etc.

Laptop connections at SSO

There is a DHCP server on the SSO network and cables in the telescope control rooms for plugging into laptop computers. You can also connect your laptop in your room at the Lodge. There is no wireless network.

More information/Questions
