NIFS Acceptance Test Plan |

The Gemini Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph will undergo acceptance tests at RSAA. These are described in SDN0004.09. This Integration and Test Plan describes the steps that are required following these acceptance tests to pack NIFS, ship it to Hawaii, perform integration and tests at the Hilo Base Facility, transport it to the Gemini North telescope, and prepare it for first light.
The schedule of tasks to be performed is shown in Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3, and Figure 4.
An overhead gantry fitted with two electric cranes is needed both at the Hilo Base Facility (HBF) and at the summit to lift the integration frame and the completely assembled instrument. These are standard Gemini items that are detailed in ICD 1.5.3/1.9.
A total of four handling carts and trolleys will be supplied by RSAA with NIFS. These trolleys will support the two thermal enclosures, the cryostat, and the integration frame during assembly. The integration frame trolley is designed to carry the complete 2 ton instrument.
The Gemini vacuum pump used to pump NIRI is needed to pump NIFS at the HBF and at the summit. An ISO-40KF fitting is required to connect the pump to the NIFS vacuum lock fitting. This is similar to that required for NIRI.
Standard coolant, dry air, and compressed helium supply and return connections are required at HBF and at the summit.

A stand-alone workstation will be provided by RSAA to control the instrument initially.
Access to instrumentation computers, disk space, and workstations are required to install NIFS software and operate instrument at HBF and summit.
After completion of the testing phase at the HBF, the NIFS subsystems will be dismantled, packed, and transported to the summit on the Gemini truck. This may require several journeys. This time period could be shortened if a suitable 3.5t enclosed truck were available and able to make the journey to the summit.
Each of the NIFS instrument components will fit within the Gemini dome elevator.
Table 1listed the scheduled staff movements.

The following gives a very preliminary costing of the Integration and Test phase. It is expected that this costing will evolve as the task time estimates are firmed up and more accurate airfare and accommodation costs are obtained.
Staff salaries is costed at $US280/day assuming a $US35/hr and 8 hr/day. Accommodation and meals are costed at $US150/day in Hilo and $US100/day at the summit. Airfares are costed at $US1000/trip. The cost of one hire car for the duration of the plan is also included. Contingencies are costed on the basis of two 7 day trips (plus 3 days transit) to Hawaii during the Hilo phase and two 7 day trips during the summit phase. The preliminary total cost is $US155,080 as itemized in Table 2.
