1 Purpose

 

This document provides a top-level overview of the NIFS instrument via links to other System Design Notes.

 

2 Science Drivers

 

NIFS is a fast-tracked, near-infrared, integral-field spectrograph designed for use with the ALTAIR adaptive optics system on Gemini North. NIFS uses duplicates of the NIRI cryostat, On-Instrument Wavefront Sensor (OIWFS), control electronics, and software. Unlike NIRI, NIFS uses a 2048´2048 Rockwell HAWAII-2 detector array.
