The Canberra International Physics Summer Schools
Since 1988 the Canberra International Physics Summer
Schools have provided intensive, first-class training in topical areas
of physics that are not covered in many senior undergraduate programs.
For this reason the Summer Schools have proved very beneficial for
senior undergraduate and postgraduate students and early-career
researchers from universities and research organizations. This tradition
will be continued in 2003.
Aims and Scope
The 2003 Summer School topic is The New
Cosmology and encompasses a treatment of the classical elements of
cosmology (general relativistic cosmology, the formation of the
elements, stars and galaxies) and an introduction to the new cosmology
in both theoretical areas (inflation, dark matter and dark energy,
particle astrophysics, quantum cosmology) and observations (the cosmic
microwave background, the high-redshift universe, gravitational
radiation). The Summer School aims to bring together leading
international and Australian experts to provide students with a broad
introduction to this exciting field.
Target Participants
The Summer School is targeted towards 3rd and 4th year
undergraduates, postgraduate students and professional researchers in
the physical sciences or mathematics who have at least 2nd year
mathematics knowledge. The level of exposition will be senior
undergraduate or beginning postgraduate. We welcome participation by
students from both Australian and foreign institutions. Depending on
available funds some financial assistance may be offered to selected
participants on the basis of need.
Lecture Notes
The New Cosmology lecture notes will be
published as a book. The notes will provide a comprehensive introduction
to modern cosmology and will be a valuable reference. All participants
will receive a copy of the book, the cost of which will be covered by
the registration fee.

Accommodation
Ursula College
We have reserved a block of rooms at Ursula College
(
http://www.anu.edu.au/res/ursula/index.shtml)
for participants in the Summer School. For students, the daily rates at
Ursula College for single rooms are $40.00 bed & breakfast and $45.50
with dinner. For others, the respective rates are $52.00 and $57.50
respectively. (These rates may be changed without notice.) The College
is situated on the ANU campus (building #50, grid reference D5 on the
campus
map), within a short walk of the Summer School venue. Free parking
is provided for guests staying at the College - ask for a parking permit
when booking your accommodation.
Participants are requested to book their accommodation
directly with Ursula College - contact Rohan McCarthy, Accommodation
Officer, Ursula College (phone: +61-(0)2-62794303; fax:
+61-(0)2-62794320; email: accommodation.ursula@anu.edu.au).
Please quote reservation code Summer School 2003. Bookings should be
made by 20 December 2002. Please note that the reserved rooms cannot be
held after this date, so prospective participants are asked to book
their accommodation early.
Other accommodation
Other accommodation on the ANU campus is available at:
Participants should book their accommodation directly with University
House or Liversidge Court. Accommodation is in high demand so we
recommend that participants book early.
Parking
For people staying at Ursula College, there is free
parking at the college, which is a short walk from the venue for the
lectures.
Otherwise, parking permits for the ANU campus can be
obtained from ANU Parking Administration at a cost of $11. If you
require a permit, please mention this in the comments on your
registration form, or email the Summer School Administrative Assistant. Only those requesting
permits prior to the summer school (by mid-January) will be able to
purchase them.
Child Care
There are three child care centres for pre-school
children on then ANU campus and within easy walking distance of the
Summer School venue. Contact the centres directly for bookings (see http://www.anu.edu.au/foyer/childcareproviders.html).
Parents requiring child care services are advised to
contact the centres/program in plenty of time, as these services are
often heavily booked. The Summer School organizers may be able to
contribute towards child care expenses incurred at an ANU centre by bona
fide students only. Students requesting this assistance are asked to
contact Dr Matthew Colless (colless@mso.anu.edu.au).
Excursion
An excursion by bus to local places of interest (Mount
Stromlo Observatory, Tidbinbilla Space Tracking Station, Tidbinbilla
Nature Reserve) will be organized for one afternoon during the Summer
School. People interested in going on the excursion will be able to sign
up for it during the Summer School. The cost of the excursion will be
kept to a minimum.
Registration
All intending participants in the Summer School must
complete the on-line registration form. Note that the capacity
of the Summer School venue is limited, and places will be filled on a
first-come basis, so early registration is advised.
The registration fee for the Summer School will be $100
(Australian dollars). This includes the cost of a copy of the published
lecture notes, which will be provided to all registered participants.
The registration fee must be paid to the Administrative Assistant by major credit card,
Australian bank cheque or international money order by 31 January 2003.
Only paid-up registrants will be permitted to attend the Summer School.
The on-line registration form is available
here.
Financial Support
A limited amount of financial support is available to
assist participants in defraying the cost of attending the Summer
School. The following guidelines will be used in providing financial
support to participants:
- Limited financial assistance will be offered on a needs basis to
bona fide undergraduate or postgraduate students only.
- For accommodation costs, assistance will only be offered towards
room and board at Ursula College on the ANU campus.
- A contribution towards travel costs may be offered to selected
3rd year or Honours year undergraduate students only. We are
unable to provide travel support to postgraduate students.
- Students requesting support should write to Dr Matthew
Colless (see contact details) before
1 December 2002, attaching proof of current enrolment or a letter
from their supervisor, lecturer or head of department.
- Applications for support will be assessed by the organizers and
payment to successful applicants will be made during the Summer
School, as credits towards accommodation costs at Ursula College
or a reimbursement of part of the registration fee.
- The exact amount of financial assistance offered to students
will not be known until all applications for assistance have
been received. To assess the level of assistance offered, it is
important that we know in advance how many student participants
require financial support.
Members of the Australian Institute of Physics attending the Summer
School from outside the ACT may apply to their State AIP Branch for some
assistance towards travel costs. Details and application forms,
including AIP graduate membership and student membership forms will be
available at the Summer School.
