Dear Penny:

Let me join the many others who I am sure have already expressed to
you the feeling of great loss over the destruction of Mount Stromlo.
And for you, a really ghastly way to begin your tenure as director. I
am incredibly glad that noone was hurt or killed, but the loss to
astronomical history and to the really excellent Australian astronomical
community is great. We are all heartened to hear that there appears to be
commitment to rebuild, and indeed there must be opportunites in this
that might not otherwise have arisen. In any case, please accept the
abundant sympathy and support that is coming your way.

I missed very much seeing you in Groningen this summer; I occupied
your office while visiting, but would much rather have seen you.
