Dear Michael,
It was with horror that I heard that the Mt Stromlo Observatory has suffered
major damage (i.e. was essentially destroyed) in the fires currently raging
through the area. I can assure you that I understand how it must feel to be in
such conditions. I still have a lively memory when I was in the Leiden station
in South Africa and we had also a bushfire coming on and surrounding the whole
station. We fortunately succeeded at that time to keep it out, but it was not
the type of experience which I like to repeat.
Please be assured that the best wishes of all the scientific staff at VILSPA, we
think of all of you and are hoping that the promises made for the future in this
sad moment will be made true. Be assured of our sympathy! That the observatory
may follow the example of the Phoenix! Of course in the meantime you have to
struggle how to assure the continuation of all the activities. If there is
anything that we could do to support or help, do not hesitate to ask.
It is gratifying that the ANU gives so much support to the program already so
directly.
I hope that you are not under those whose personal houses have been also
destroyed by the fires, as, I gather, has happened to a number of people.
Be assured that our thoughts are with you and all who have been affected.
