Dr. Geoffrey Bicknell
Mt. Stromlo Observatory
January 24, 2003
Dear Geoff,
We are greatly shocked to hear that the Mt Stromlo observatory
has been burnt by the bush fire in the Canberra area
hit on January 18, 2003 and it was heavily damaged.
It is a pity to hear the invaluable loss of telescopes
and buildings in such a short moment. But we feel relieved to
hear that no one from the observatory has been injured
in the fire.
It is our sincerest wish that you and all the observatory
will soon be able to recover from this misfortune. We
strongly request full support for rebuilding the observatory; quick
and complete replacement funding by the Australian government
is essential for astronomical science in Australia.
Lost equipment, including the loss of the new instrument (NIFS)
for the Gemini telescope, are very important for world
astronomy and we would like to see them rebuilt as soon as possible.
Sincerely yours,
CANGAROO team
