Subject: Sincere thoughts
Matthew, I saw the pictures on your web-site of the Mt
Stromlo site, they show incredible destruction. I have been
struck over the last few days as to the similarities between
Stromlo and the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. We had a
fire on the mountain last summer which was small and quickly
put out but nevertheless ripped a swath through the
vegetation.
My colleagues at the observatory have been discussing ways
in which we might more usefully show our convern for fellow
astronomers in need, and if you have suggestions as to what
we might do, please let me know. I for one would be willing
to billet a scientist at my place, and share an office, if
there were reasons for someone to want to get away but also
keep working in a very active environment.
I still get the GSMTWG e-mails and see that things are
quickly progressing. Wish you all luck in your endeavours
and hope that on the personal front the fires did not
significantly set back your work or your life.
with sympathies,
doug
