Dear Michael,
With the deepest concern and regret I have heard the news about the
terrific fire at Mt. Stromlo. I participate in the feelings of sorrow
of the astronomical community of Australia and of all over the world.
Last September we, too, had heavy woodfires all around Moscow, the
city was embedded for several weeks in a thick smog, it was difficult
to breath, and the damage was indeed important.
I was in Mt. Stromlo and Tidbinbilla in November 2001, during the IAU
Symposium 209, and I recall the very nice party at the Observatory
with you as the chief. Helas, this time has gone, but let me hope for
a recovery. I heard also that the Tidbinbilla antenna has remained
intact, but the wild life reserve has probably been devastated, is it
so?
Sincerely yours
Georgij Rudnitskij
