A Facility of National Importance

Location

SSO is the premier facility on the Australian mainland for optical and infrared astrophysics research. It is located in the Warrumbungle Mountains near Coonabarabran in northern New South Wales.

The ANU has the following telescopes at Siding Spring Observatory:

• 2.3m Advanced Technology Telescope
• 40inch Telescope
• 24inch Telescope

In addition to our own telescopes, several other organisations have located their telescopes at our observatory:

• 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope
• 2m Faulkes Telescope
• 1.24m UK Schmidt Telescope
• 0.6m Uppsala Schmidt Telescope
• 0.5m Automatic Patrol Telescope
