Tour de Stromlo 2003

Official Results of the 2003 Tour de Stromlo and Stromlo Gift

2003 saw the annual Tour de Stromlo and Stromlo Gift held 62 years to the day after the inaugural event on December 5th, 1941.

Extensive remodelling of the course by the forces of nature on January 18, 2003 offered cyclists a new expansive view of the Brindabellas, southern Canberra and the course ahead of them as they powered their way up the mountain.

The new vista also forced a change to the route for the Stromlo Gift. For the first time, the Gift started at the boomgate near House 2, following the road to the top, past the remnants of the Yale-Columbia telescope, the 74inch, the 50inch, and finally completing a lap around the elm tree loop before finishing in the usual place in front of the remains of the historic Murdoch-designed Administration building.

Thanks go to Walter Stibbs for starting the cycle race, the ACT Cross-country club for the starter's pistol, Bill Roberts for organising the event, and the numerous marshalls, drivers and photographers for making the day a success. Photos below by Kim Sebo, Marilena Salvo and Brad Warren.
