A SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF THE DISK OF STARS IN WHICH THE GRAND DESIGN GALAXY N
Project Description:
NGC 1566 is a grand-design spiral galaxy in which the spiral arms extend out to very large radius. We propose to measure its optical rotation curve, which will reach out well into the dark-matter-dominated region of this galaxy. At the same time, we will acquire low resolution blue spectra to estimate the age and metallicity of the stars in NGC 1566's outer disk.
