Our aim is to characterise the component stars in wide white dwarf binaries.
When a star dies it returns kinetic energy and chemically enriched gas to its environment.
These white dwarfs are suitable for measuring just how much gas a star casts into the interstellar
medium as it expires. This information is important for understanding the fate of the Sun and
for determining the critical mass above which stars end their lives as supernovae.
