Title:
Planetary nebulae in the edge-on galaxy NGC 2188
Project Description:
The edge-on orientation of the spiral galaxy NGC 2188 allows us to hunt above the thin disk of stars for a thicker disk. If this thick disk is found and rotates in the opposite direction to the thin disk, then another galaxy accreted onto NGC 2188 in the past. The ANU's brand new WiFeS spectrograph will find bright shrouds of dying stars (planetary nebulae) which trace of the motions of these 2 different disks.
