Title:
The Age-Velocity-Metallicity Relation in the Nearby Disk
Project Description:
As the galactic disk evolves, it becomes chemically enriched and the random velocities of its stars increase as they interact with spiral arms and molecular clouds. The relation between age, velocity and metallicity is the basis for our understanding of the evolution of galactic disks, but is currently not well determined. We are undertaking a large observational program of about 1000 stars to determine the definitive relation.
