Travel
For
international participants Canberra is a short (45 minute)
commuter flight from either Sydney or Melbourne
airports,
which are serviced by most major
carriers
including Qantas, United and Air
New
Zealand. February is the low season for
travel to
Australia.
The Qantas flights Sydney-Canberra and Melbourne-Canberra can be
ordered online separately from international flight and will likely be
less expensive and more flexible than the connecting flights, (See
Qantas web site in Australia http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn/home/qualifier-region-au
)
Accomodation information can be found
here
A
detailed map of the
conference site and the adjacent ANU campus indicating key points of
reference can be found here
Parking
For participants driving to the meeting, parking is available at several
lots adjacent to the Shine Dome as indicated on the map. This is pay
parking with the charges ranging from $4-$8 dollars a day and requires
coins for the meters. No parking is available for
conference participants
in the Academy lot itself.
Tourist info
about Canberra
Here
is some tourist information. We will provide booklets in your
registration package.
Ocean and Mt. Kosciusko
(A note from
Ulyana)
I will try to help arranging (rent a car, group and direct
people, maybe drive myself etc.) two trips, which, on my opinion, are
the most exciting one-day activities you can find in Canberra.
For both trips you will need a car and a day of your time.
I would expect the relevant days would be one or two directly
before or after the conference.
1) A trip to the coast (Pebbly Beach) featuring swimming, parrot
watching and kengaroos not being afraid of people touching them.
2) Climbing the highest Australian peak Mount Cosciusco (2 228 m. tall
- a very easy 4-hour walk in the national park - fantastic views)
- Preliminary plan is that I drive to Cosciusco on Friday, Feb 20-th
