Travel to Canberra

Canberra is located 250 km South West of Sydney, and is serviced with on-the-hour flights from Sydney, and several flights a day from Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Coach and rail services are available from Sydney several times a day. It is a 3hr drive from Sydney, or about 8 hours from Melbourne, if you wish to hire a car.

Important!

Most International Travellers will require either an Electronic Travel Authority, or a VISA to travel to Australia. Please visit the ETA site to see if you are eligible. If not, you will need to apply for a visa through your local Australian Consulate Office as soon as possible. Some travel agencies will apply for the ETA for you as part of their service, but you should not assume they have done this for you.

  • Qantas Airlines serves Canberra directly from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
  • Virgin Blue Airlines serves Canberra directly from Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney
  • Tiger Airways serves Canberra directly from Melbourne and Adelaide
  • Brindabella Airlines serves Canberra directly from Albury, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle and Port Macquarie.
  • Coach (Bus) service is provided by Murrays and Greyhound, and rail service is via CountryLink

Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth are all served by a several international carriers.

It is useful to have a car to get around Canberra (and essential that we have enough cars to get people up to Mt Stromlo). If you would like to hire a car in Canberra, I find expedia the most reliable place to get a good deal.
