We’ve studied a rich cluster at redshift 2.38.
- It contains a ~1Mpc core of red galaxies, some with enormous Ly-alpha luminosities.
- These red galaxies are probably mature giant elliptical galaxies.
- The galaxies are immersed in a ~5Mpc halo of neutral hydrogen.
- The gas in this halo consists of millions of short-lived, million solar mass clouds.
- At least 10% of the baryons are locked up in giant elliptical galaxies and the neutral gas clouds.
- This is probably the ancestor or a rich galaxy cluster today.
