The Cluster Members: 1 Ly-alpha Galaxies
The cluster contains three enormously bright Ly-alpha sources, all at the same redshift and with fluxes greater than . These are the type of sources that people like Djorgovski tried and failed to find for years: given the many enormous control samples that failed to find any to our flux limits, the presence of three within one proper cubic Mpc is highly significant, and suggests that we really do have a cluster here.
One of our sources, Blob 1, has an extended Ly-alpha nebula more than 50 kpc in size: reminiscent of the blob found by Mauro and collaborators. In our case, it’s enormous equivalent width and CIV emission imply that it is photoionised by some concealed radio-quiet AGN.
