What is an “E+A” Galaxy?

• Strong Balmer line absorption and weak [OII] emission

• The name “E+A” derived through features apparent in the spectra

  • “E” part is associated with the spectra showing characteristics of stellar populations from elliptical galaxies
  • “A” part from Balmer lines typical of spectra associated with “A” type stars
  • Also known as “K+A” galaxies
